Finishing Well

I’ve been reading a book written by Steve Farrar titled “Finishing Strong” which was written to encourage men to invest for the long haul in their families and in their relationship with God. This same theme runs through the book of 1 Kings (the subject of our Wednesday PM Bible Study this past week and next). King Solomon, the primary character of the first eleven chapters, had a stellar start as a ruler and in his relationship with God. The subject of both adulation and emulation, in the early years his life was focused on pleasing God, investing heavily in building the Temple in Jerusalem. However there was a problem the seeds of which were planting long before the bitter fruit was produced. The heart of Solomon was turned from God to the gods of the pagans around him by the pagan wives he had allowed to come into his life in contradiction of the law of God. Knowing wisdom is not the same as living wisely and Solomon is a prime example of the truth of this.

This week in our Wednesday With The Word we are going to be finishing 1 Kings by looking at the life of a man (Elijah) who began strongly and if anything finished even more strongly than what he began. Both of these are a reminder to us that it’s “he that endureth to the end” that will be saved.
