Good To Great In The Social Sectors
I’ve been reading a little monograph "Good To Great In The Social Sectors" by Jim Collins. This little paperback, created as an addendum to the bestseller "Good To Great" is specifically targeted at the unique settings and special conditions that leaders in social organizations must deal with.
Here are a few random thoughts:
- Performance must be assessed relative to the mission and not financial returns.
- True leadership only exists if people follow when they have the freedom not to.
Particularly striking were three important things for leaders in the social sectors to grasp when filling positions:
- The more selective the process the more attractive the position becomes.
- The one advantage in the social sector is the individuals desperate craving for meaning in life. Purity of mission has the power to ignite passion and commitment.
- Number one resource is having enough of the right people willing to commit themselves to mission.
The flywheel concept: success breeds support and commitment which breeds even greater success.
One final statement that deserves some thought. Great organizations are building clocks, not telling time.
