Book Review: Blue Like Jazz

bluelikejazz While I was on a brief vacation I picked up a copy of the book “Blue Like Jazz” for 50 cents at a Thrift Store. I had heard a lot about the book, pro and con, and decided to make it part of my summer reading list.

Most of the reading was done while waiting while my family shopped, or, while my wife was driving on the way home.

First off, I read the first couple of chapters and pretty much decided that would be all. The writing style in my opinion was quirky and seemed a bit disjointed. But, since I was in my van and it was the only book handy I persevered.

There were some passages I underlined although probably not enough to make me pay retail for the book.

Here’s one: “I don’t think any church has ever been relevant to culture, to the human struggle, unless it believed in Jesus and the power of His gospel. If the supposed new church believes in trendy music and cool Web pages, then it is not relevant to culture either. It is just another tool of Satan to get people to be passionate about nothing.” (Page 111)

And another: “I want you to understand that God has never been nor ever will be invented. He is not a product of any sort of imagination. He does not obey trends.” (Page 92)

One last quote: “…no drug is as powerful as the drug of self. No rut in the mind is so deep as the one that says I am the world, the world belongs to me, all people are characters in my play. There is no addiction so powerful as self-addiction.”

Summing it up – a quick though quirky read. You can probably find a better way to spend the time.
