Loyalty Programs and Churches
I started a course in Marketing Management tonight at McGill University and am looking forward to the rest of the semester.
While listening to the introductory lecture and discussion on what marketing is and how the basics of it works the subject of loyalty programs came up. Of course, the purpose of loyalty programs is to gain information about clients and their habits to encourage loyalty to the brand and even a sense of ownership in the brand.
My mind wandered a little bit as I thought of the loyalty programs I’m a member of - Esso Extra - Airmiles - Sears points - Canadian Tire - of how I will drive by a Petro Canada to get to an Esso. Then I thought of a loyalty program that was developed back before corporations came out with theirs. In hindsight in many ways it was a work of genius that has disappeared from most if not all churches.
Perhaps I’m dating myself by referring to this - but I was remembering back to the days in my childhood church when if you had perfect attendance for a year you were awarded a pin. For the second year there was a wreath that would attach to the pin and surround it. Subsequent years added bars that would hang down from the pin. I can still remember being proud of having the pin and a number of bars.
Strange isn’t it that we really haven’t developed a successor to this "loyalty" program that rewards consistent attendance and helps to create a sense of ownership.
Got any ideas for a "loyalty" program for churches? A reward system (beyond it just being the right thing to do) that will encourage people to develop consistency and faithfulness as habits? Feel free to leave a comment!
Oh, yeah, here’s what the pins looked like.
