Got A Plan?
Last week I walked into my PR Research class a few minutes early. I stopped to speak to the instructor and, knowing that I am a pastor, he said “I would really be interested in knowing what kind of PR plans churches are using.”
My initial, unspoken response was “So would I!” however, erring on the side of decorum I said something like “Most churches don’t have a formal plan but rather act instinctively.”
As a student of church growth over the years I have accumulated many books, sat through seminars and sermons, tried various programs and projects, but in over 25 years I have never been in a session that dealt with the development of a Public Relations plan for a local church. There are many things that are put in place that are public relations related but they are not usually part of a cohesive long term public relations or communications plan.
Systematically developing a Public Relations Plan will help to focus vision, keep the organization on message and create greater exposure in the community surrounding it.
Over the next few posts I intend to look at some basics of Public Relations as they pertain to the church and how even a small church can intentionally develop a Public Relations Plan that will help them lead people to Christ.
