Allah In Church?

Posted by: admin on Friday, March 13th, 2009

malay-allah "We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of Allah.” These are words repeated daily in Mass by many Catholics in Malaysia. Muslims find the usage offensive even though it is the normal word for God in Malay, feeling that it is being used in an attempt to convert Muslims to Christianity.

While technically in Malay the word Allah simply denotes God, in an English North American context it is jarring because of the association of the term "Allah" with Islam.

Is it a reminder that we tend to contextualize Christian language with a  North American worldview or is it a sign of things to come?

Let me know what you think.
